CHROME
My browser is probably the application that I most often use and is integral to my computer use. A cool new web browser feature can make all the difference to your internet productivity and I am etrnally gratefull to whoever had the idea of adding tabs to a web browser. After seeing yet another Google rep talking about the Chrome browser on the news I thought to myself "Let's have a look at Google's new Chrome." He wasn't saying much more than about how Chrome makes it easier to watch Youtube and use Google Maps but I thought I'd have a look anyway.
I am a user of the Internet Explorer browser at the moment. Microsoft give me a professional looking site for free (my infotainment site Spiralcat) and the only catch (ok, there are a lot of catches with officelive, but a main one) is that it must be designed online with their proprietary browser. I have Opera and Firefox installed on my machine as well, but as Internet Explorer now has tabs I find I don't feel the need to use them anymore. I tend to load up the Microsoft web browser to work on my site and then not get round to switching to one of the cooler browsers like Firefox.
I won't ever be able to give up the Internet Explorer browser from Microsoft but at the same time I have been caught up in the hype about the new browser from Google and I'm as curious about it as any true hearted geek. So let's Google it up and download it.
Oh goodness what a nightmare.
In my download window it advertises itself as being only 470ish kb. I gladly hit run but then it goes back on the internet and just keeps on downloading. For something like half an hour I'm watching a browser try to download, and then after making me wait all that time it falls over. It tells me it couldn't manage to install itself and has aborted.
All the while it's oddly childish logo is mesmerising me with it's single evil robotic eye. It looks like a strange cross between the Pokemon monster prison and that old Simon electronic game. There is a link saying help me fix this in the installer's error window, I click it and my computer crashes. All in all not an impressive performance and I'm forced to ask myself why I was downloading this browser in the first place. Apparently it makes watching Youtube easier. I don't think I'll bother giving it a second try any time soon. I'm not a big fan of Youtube as I use my Browser to produce creative stuff like my role-playing game, so unless Chrome has some killer new idea I'll probably give it a miss.
