Reading

Reading is very important for building vocabulary and for developing a feeling for English.

Read some English every day. If you are finding books and articles too difficult then read comic books
(you can find some free online comic books on my reading resources link page).
They are very good at teaching language.
You read three or four sentences and you have a picture to look at to help you understand them.

Choose a book, newspaper, comic book or magazine that you find interesting,
and reading at least a page a day. It will not feel so bad.
Chose a book with modern language.
Dickens can wait, right now you should be reading Crime Thrillers or Science Fiction etc.
Here are just two reading ideas from limitless options.
America the Beautiful

America the Beautiful

A more difficult beginner book but it is full of modern language.
A well loved book with 21 reviews on Amazon last time I looked.
This book is so great not just because it gives a real glimpse into a very interesting life, (the names of the characters have been changed but it seems very autobiographical to me) but because the details are so real and compelling. It has many scenes from a real and imperfect but still very enjoyable life. The book describes a person with the open sensibility of a hippy interacting with the modern day world. A person whose life is comfortable but not secure and who is still young and discovering things.

The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett

This is a funny book which is quite thin and easy to read. It is perfect for learning English and the English version of the book is thought to be much better than the translations. The book is light inventive and fun which allows you to take in the Language without feeling like you are doing homework.
