Be Kind Rewind

Two odd guys inadvertently wipe the entire stock of a video store they are looking after for ther boss Danny Glover and to avoid his ire they have to reshoot the movies themselves as replacements.

Guess what, the customers like their versions better. Their versions dont have the production values of the hollywood movies and their first movie Ghostbusters has to be shot in just a couple of hours.

A magical realism masterpiece of a movie, it is arty and funny too.

A great date movie for a night in with a DVD and a bottle of wine that both can enjoy.

I saw this movie on DVD and enjoyed it a lot. It isn't as good as the director's other movie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

But it has something that other movie didn't a sense of community.

The director of the movie went to enormous lengths to include the residents of the small New York neighbourhood where it is set and his efforts payed dividends, the obviously non-actor residents of the neighbourhood provide a warm and friendly vibe throughout and give the movie a strange sense of authenticity despite the mad plot and the odd antics and over the top mannerisms of the two main actors.

Both Mos Def and Jack Black are well cast and do a great job but the stars of the movie are the strange cobbled together props that the two use in their remakes of Hollywood movies.

My favourite is the Robocop outfit made of car parts with a hair dryer for a gun.

The movie has a lot to say about what is real and what is fake and this movie although it couldn't be more unreal turns out to be very far from fake.
